The gist was that while the nominal leader may be the one with the title president, CEO or managing director, true authority and leadership may lie elsewhere. Typically, the obvious top of the hierarchy is followed by everyone else. This got me wondering about the role of the follower.
I will assign roles formally or share them informally with a goal to build tje entire school's capacity to improve and achieve excellence. As an educational leader I will have a variety of important roles and responsibilities; some of which are: Resource Provider--Provide colleagues by sharing instructional resources.
These might include websites, instructional materials, readings, or other resources to use with students and in professional learning communities. I will study research-based classroom strategies; explore which instructional methodologies are appropriate for the school; and share findings with colleagues.
I will lead teachers to agree on standards, follow the adopted curriculum, use common pacing charts, and develop shared assessments.
Learning Facilitator--Facilitate professional learning opportunities among staff members. When teachers learn with and from one another, they gain knowledge on what most directly improves student learning.
This professional learning becomes more relevant, focuses on teachers' classroom work, and aligns to fill gaps in student learning. Such communities of learning can break the norms of isolation present in many schools. School Leader--Develop a vision for the school that aligns with the professional goals of the school and district.
Data Coach--Facilitate and engage teachers in analyzing and using readily available student data to strengthen and drive classroom instruction.
Catalyst for Change--Commitment to continual improvement by tirelessly searching for ways to make processes and procedures more efficient. I am a visionay who is "never content with the status quo but rather always looking for a better way" Larner,p.
Learner--As an educational leader one of the most important roles I will assume is that of learner. Learners model continual improvement, demonstrate lifelong learning, and use what they learn to help all students achieve.A Leader’s Role in Achieving Excellence in Execution This is a guest post by Robin Speculand, author of Excellence in Execution: How to Implement Your Strategy.
